Sustainable Design and Construction

Pinck is Green!

Pinck & Co. is committed to sustainable design and construction and has led numerous projects that have successfully implemented green and sustainable elements. We believe that good quality construction equals healthy construction and that green and sustainable elements are affordable and achievable.

Benchmarking Performance for MSBA Commissioning (2010)

Pinck & Co., together with the RISE group, worked with the Massachusetts School Building Authority to draft a commissioning program for implementation on all public school projects receiving MSBA reimbursements. The goal was to bring our best practice experience in commissioning to the realm of public school construction in a manageable and cost effective manner. The scope of the work included benchmarking performance, the creation of a draft commissioning manual and templates for standard scope, RFP, bid form and compliance affidavits. This process also included drafting an evaluation process for applications for services.

Castle Square, Boston (In Construction)

Planning and renovation to a 500-unit affordable housing development, while maintaining occupancy, and a Deep Energy Retrofit. Castle Square received a $4.4 million grant from DOER for improvements focusing on reducing energy cost for the complex by 70%. Project also received $6.75 million low interest loan from HUD for a comprehensive energy retrofit. Although similar energy savings are currently being achieved in Europe, this project would be the first existing multifamily building in the U.S. to achieve this level of energy savings. The project anticipates LEED certification.

The Fay School, Southborough (2010)

Pinck & Co. served as Owner’s Project Manager for the Campus Master Plan—a $43 million program over four years. The project included wastewater recycling and extensive environmentally sustainable landscaping. The dormitories received LEED Gold certification in spring 2010. City Year Headquarters, Boston (2009)

A 25,000 square foot tenant fit-out for the national headquarters and the Boston office. The project received LEED certification for commercial interiors in 2009.

Imani House, Dorchester (2007)

The gut rehabilitation of a Victorian wood frame building produced nine units of affordable housing for senior veterans, previously homeless. When tested Imani House achieved the best HERS results of any project to date in Massachusetts.

Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, Boston (2003-2005)

BCNC’s daycare, youth center, adult education and after school facility received a LEED Silver rating in 2006. With a matching grant from the Kresge Foundation, the Center chose to participate in the program well after construction commenced, thereby making the effort particularly challenging.

Greenworks, Cambridge (2004-2005)

The 6,000 square foot office fit-out in East Cambridge for Gravestar Inc. achieved LEED certification under commercial interiors prorgram. As the Owner’s Representative, Pinck & Co. oversaw the design/build effort for this office space and also served as the LEED Accredited Professional.

Homes at Wellington Hill, Mattapan (2004-2005)

The eight units for first time home buyers incorporated and exceeded the requirements established by the City of Boston Department of Neighborhood Development’s healthy home standards. As part of the Energy Star Homes program the units achieved HERS rating at the highest level.

Third Sector New England, Boston (2004-2005)

The 120,000 square foot redevelopment of a nine story building in the South Station area received LEED certification in 2006, under the pilot program for Corporate Interiors.

Erie Ellington, Dorchester (1999-2000)

This 50 unit residential development demonstrated that green design and construction could be implemented on an affordable housing project. Erie Ellington achieved its results and stands as one of the first affordable housing projects that successfully incorporated green and sustainable elements.
